Bihar: Mohd Shahabuddin's Son And Wife Join Lalu Yadav's RJD

In a significant political move, Hena Sahab and her son Osama, the family of the late Mohd Shahabuddin, a former Member of Parliament from Siwan, have joined the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). Their joining was facilitated under the auspices of RJD's chief, Lalu Prasad Yadav, and Tejashwi Yadav, the former deputy Chief Minister of Bihar.

This event underscores a pivotal juncture for the RJD, especially with the assembly elections in Bihar looming on the horizon, expected to take place in October-November 2025. The integration of Shahabuddin's family into the RJD is anticipated to bolster the party's influence, not only in Siwan but across the state of Bihar.

Shahabuddin, who held sway in Siwan from 1996 to 2004, passed away in 2021 due to COVID-19 complications while serving a life sentence in Tihar Jail for a double murder. His dominance in Siwan's political landscape was well-known, and his family's entry into the RJD marks a continuation of his political legacy. Lalu Yadav, expressing his contentment over this new addition to the party, remarked, "It's good. We welcome him." This gesture of welcoming Shahabuddin's family seems to signify RJD's strategy to consolidate its base by embracing influential political legacies within Bihar.

The political landscape in Bihar is set to witness intense activity with the upcoming by-polls in the state, which include constituencies such as Ramgarh, Tarari, Imamganj, and Belaganj. These by-polls are part of a larger electoral exercise spread across 15 states, including Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and West Bengal. The participation of Shahabuddin's family in the RJD is expected to influence the party's performance, not just in the by-polls but also in the subsequent assembly elections.

Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan (Lalan) Singh commented on the developments, stating, "It is a good thing, whoever wants to join should join... This shows what they (RJD) are doing, who all are they bringing and blaming us but they are the ones doing the work." His remarks highlight the competitive nature of Bihar's political arena, where affiliations and alliances are constantly evolving.

The inclusion of Hena Sahab and Osama into the RJD was announced in a setting that reflects the party's intent to strengthen its ideological reach and consolidate support. A party representative stated, "Today in the presence of RJD's chief (Lalu Yadav), our strong leader Hena Sahab has re-joined the party. Her son Osama has also joined the party. Many supporters have also taken the party membership. I believe that this will strengthen the party in Siwan as well as in the whole of Bihar. Through this medium, we will work to spread our ideology of secularism to the people." This move is seen as an effort to rejuvenate the party's base in Siwan, a region that has historically been a stronghold for Shahabuddin.

The transition of Hena Sahab and Osama to the RJD fold marks a new chapter in Bihar's political narrative. With the assembly elections on the horizon, the RJD appears to be fortifying its position by welcoming influential political figures and their families into its ranks. This strategic inclusion signals a potential shift in the political dynamics of Bihar, where legacy and ideology continue to play pivotal roles.
