Bihar Enhances Road Safety with High-Tech Highway Patrol Vehicles

In a significant move to enhance road safety, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar launched a fleet of high-tech vehicles dedicated to patrolling highways across the state, notorious for a high incidence of road accidents. The initiative saw the introduction of 23 advanced vehicles equipped with the latest technology aimed at curbing traffic violations and reducing accident rates on national highways. Additionally, 94 vehicles were dispatched to aid various traffic police stations and anti-human trafficking units in their operations.

High-Tech Patrol Vehicles in Bihar

The deployment of these high-tech patrolling vehicles marks the first phase of a comprehensive plan to bolster highway safety. According to Additional Director General (ADG) of Bihar Police Traffic Sudhanshu Kumar, this initial batch will cover 1,125 km of national highways. Subsequent phases will see an expansion, with 38 vehicles in the second phase and 54 in the final phase, further strengthening the traffic police's capabilities.

Strategically positioned every 50 km, these patrolling units are set to play a pivotal role in timely assistance and rescue operations for accident victims on highways. Each vehicle will be manned by a sub-inspector (SI), ensuring professional handling of incidents. Highlighting the gravity of the situation, ADG Kumar pointed out that 44 per cent of road accident deaths occur on national highways, underscoring the critical need for such an initiative.

The vehicles boast a new 4D imaging radar-based speed violation detection system, capable of effective traffic monitoring. This system utilizes radar for speed measurement while lane video cameras automatically capture the number plates of offending vehicles. Additionally, these cameras are capable of recording various violations including red light jumping, wrong side driving, and triple riding on two-wheelers, even under low light conditions.

Addressing Road Safety Challenges

With over speeding accounting for 30 per cent and wrong side driving for 12 per cent of road fatalities in Bihar, the implementation of stringent traffic rule enforcement is anticipated to significantly reduce the number of accidents on state highways. The ADG expressed confidence that proper enforcement would lead to a notable decrease in road fatalities.

The Bihar government's commitment to reducing road accident fatalities is evident through its proactive measures. These efforts are in response to the Supreme Court committee on road safety's directive to introduce highway patrolling on accident-prone stretches as a means to mitigate road fatalities.

Bihar's Transport Department's annual report revealed a 16.13 per cent increase in road accident deaths in 2022 compared to the previous year, highlighting the urgent need for effective solutions. The introduction of high-tech patrolling vehicles is a step forward in the state's ongoing efforts to enhance road safety and save lives.

This initiative not only represents a significant advancement in traffic monitoring and enforcement but also demonstrates the government's dedication to addressing one of the most pressing public safety challenges in Bihar. By leveraging technology and strategic deployment, there is a hopeful outlook towards achieving a reduction in road accidents and fatalities on the state's highways.
