Biased Umpire! Rahul Gandhi Slams Election Commission Again
Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, launched a scathing attack on the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Saturday, accusing the poll body of bias and holding it responsible for the party's repeated setbacks in Gujarat's assembly elections.
Speaking at the Congress' 'Sangathan Sujan Abhiyan' camp in Anand, Gandhi emphasized the need to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in what he called its "main base" - Gujarat. He urged Congress workers to rebuild the party's organisational strength in the state and reassured them that the central leadership would consult local voices during the candidate selection process for future elections.

"Biased Umpire", Says Rahul Gandhi
In a metaphor-laden address, Rahul Gandhi compared the Election Commission to a partial umpire in a cricket match, suggesting that the Congress lost not due to its own shortcomings but because of alleged manipulation by the ECI.
"In cricket, if you keep getting out repeatedly, you may begin to doubt yourself. But sometimes, it's not your mistake - it's the umpire who is biased," Gandhi reportedly told party workers, as quoted by Surendranagar Congress president Naushad Solanki. Solanki added that Gandhi attributed the 2017 defeat in Gujarat to irregularities in the voter list, labelling it "dubious."
Gandhi also likened India to a temple, asserting that the ruling BJP and its ideological ally, the RSS, have monopolized access to the benefits of democracy, deciding "who will get the prasad" - a metaphor for resources and power.
Strategic Shift: Focus on Gujarat as BJP Stronghold
Party insiders say the speech marks a strategic shift in Congress' electoral approach. Rather than focusing solely on states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, Gandhi stated that defeating the BJP in Gujarat could create momentum for national revival. "If the BJP can be defeated in Gujarat, it can be defeated anywhere," he reportedly said.
Ground-Level Restructuring Underway
The 'Sangathan Sujan Abhiyan' is part of a broader organisational revamp in Gujarat. The state Congress unit has recently appointed new district presidents, aiming to decentralize decision-making and prepare for the 2027 Assembly elections.
Rajkot Congress chief Rajdeepsinh Jadeja said that Gandhi instructed party workers to focus on grassroots issues and ensure that local concerns are amplified in state-level discourse. "He encouraged leaders to stay connected with the public and raise civic and economic issues impacting daily life," Jadeja noted.
Congress Leaders Echo Concerns
Congress functionaries present at the Anand camp endorsed Gandhi's remarks, also accusing the ECI of favoring the ruling party. "Rahul ji gave us the confidence to fight back. The problem is not with the party's commitment - it's with the system that supports the ruling regime," Solanki added.
As the Congress seeks to regain lost ground in Gujarat, where the BJP has held power for over two decades, Gandhi's remarks appear to set the tone for a more aggressive and ground-centric political strategy.
