Bengal Bypoll Results 2024: TMC Targets Clean Sweep Amid RG Kar Surge—What Numbers Say

The ongoing by-elections in West Bengal have put the spotlight the Trinamool Congress (TMC) as the party has established a significant lead in all six assembly constituencies where the polls were conducted. The counting of votes started at 8 am on Saturday, revealing a clear trend towards the TMC, amid heightened political activity stemming from contentious issues such as the RG Kar Medical College incident that has stirred public emotions across the state.

In the face of the recent protests and public outcry related to the RG Kar Medical College incident, the by-elections in West Bengal have garnered widespread attention. These elections were necessitated by the resignation of sitting MLAs who had won in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, thereby vacating their assembly seats. The constituencies in question include Naihati, Haroa, Medinipur, Taldangra, Sitai (SC), and Madarihat (ST), with the TMC leading decisively in each.

In specific constituencies, the TMC's candidates have shown remarkable performance. For instance, in Sitai, a constituency reserved for Scheduled Castes, TMC's Sangita Roy is ahead with a significant margin of 1,22,342 votes, far surpassing her closest opponent from the BJP. Similarly, in Madarihat, a Scheduled Tribe seat, Jayprakash Toppo of the TMC leads with an impressive margin, a seat previously won by the BJP in the 2021 assembly elections, highlighting a significant shift in voter sentiment.

The TMC's dominance is evident in other constituencies as well, such as Naihati, where Sanat Dey has garnered a substantial number of votes against the BJP's candidate. In Haroa, TMC's SK Rabiul Islam leads by a wide margin, showcasing the party's stronghold across diverse constituencies. The trend continues in Medinipur and Taldangra, where TMC candidates lead over their BJP counterparts, reinforcing the party's position in South Bengal, its traditional stronghold.

Despite the BJP's efforts to retain its presence, especially in the northern seat of Madarihat, it trails behind the TMC across all constituencies. This shift underscores the TMC's potential to consolidate its dominance in West Bengal's political landscape, even in the face of challenges such as the RG Kar incident that could have swayed public opinion.

The by-elections are a critical test for the TMC, reflecting not just on its immediate electoral prospects but also on its broader political strategy in the state. The leads in these constituencies signify a strong endorsement from the electorate, potentially setting the stage for the party's future endeavors in West Bengal.

As the counting of votes continues, the focus remains on the final outcomes and their implications for the state's politics. The by-elections, coming at a time of heightened political sensitivity, could be a bellwether for the TMC's hold over West Bengal, amidst challenges both old and new.
