Bangladeshi Traders Miss Kolkata Fair Amid Unrest, Local Affiliates Step In
The absence of Bangladeshi traders was strongly felt at the India International Grand Trade Fair (IIGTF) 2024 in Kolkata, as ongoing political unrest and a human rights crisis in Bangladesh disrupted their participation.
Reports of attacks on minorities and the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government have further compounded the situation, leaving local affiliates to manage the Bangladeshi stalls.

Visa Issues Keep Traders Away
The IIGTF 2024, held in New Town, Kolkata, typically sees active participation from Bangladeshi traders, known for their traditional Jamdani saris and FMCG products, as reported by Hindustan Times. However, this year, at least seven Bangladeshi traders were unable to attend due to visa-related restrictions following the political upheaval in their home country.
"To our knowledge, seven traders were supposed to join the fair, but visa issues prevented their participation," said N G Khaitan, President of the Bharat Chamber of Commerce, which is organizing the event in collaboration with CCG Marketing & Services.
Local Affiliates Step In
Despite their absence, some Bangladeshi products, including the renowned Dhakai Jamdani saris, have made it to the stalls, thanks to shipments sent before the crisis escalated. Local traders have stepped up to manage the sales, ensuring that these unique offerings are still available to customers, as reported by Hindustan Times.
"These are original Dhakai Jamdani saris," confirmed a local trader representing a Bangladeshi businessman, though the product variety remains limited due to the traders' absence.
Consumer Sentiment and Challenges
While the products are available, organizers noted a subdued enthusiasm among consumers, possibly influenced by reports of atrocities on minorities in Bangladesh. "The absence of Bangladeshi traders is deeply felt, as they usually account for a significant portion of sari sales at Kolkata trade fairs," one organizer shared.
A Diverse Trade Fair Amid Challenges
The IIGTF 2024, hosting traders from eight international countries and 16 Indian states, continues to run until December 15. However, the political unrest in Bangladesh casts a shadow over the fair, disrupting a long-standing tradition of Bangladeshi participation in Indian trade fairs during the winter months, as per media reports..
The local business community remains hopeful for a resolution to the crisis, allowing the return of Bangladeshi traders in future events and preserving the cultural and commercial exchanges they have fostered over the years.
