Balasore Train Accident: FIR Registered Against Unknown Persons, 'Sabotage' Suspected

The Balasore Government Railway Police (GRP) station has registered a First Information Report (FIR) in connection with the train accident that occurred in Balasore last Friday.

The case has been filed under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Railway Act, including charges of deaths caused by negligence and endangering safety of persons.

Odisha Train Accident: Odisha Rail Police Files FIR, Sabotage Suspected

The Railway Ministry has requested the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to conduct a probe into the train accident in Odisha, which involved three trains: a goods train, Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, and Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express.

After ruling out driver error and system malfunctioning, the Railways is now considering the possibility of sabotage and tampering with the electronic interlocking system. This raises concerns about intentional interference in the functioning of the railway infrastructure.

The official death toll in the triple-train accident has been revised from 288 to 275, as some bodies were double-counted, according to Odisha Chief Secretary PK Jena.

The tragic incident occurred when the Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express, en route to Chennai, collided with a stationary goods train on the adjacent track. The impact caused some of the rear carriages of the Coromandel Express to derail onto a third track. Subsequently, a few coaches of the Coromandel Express toppled onto the last coaches of the Bengaluru-Howrah Express, which was passing by at the same time.

With the FIR registered and a CBI investigation underway, authorities aim to uncover the cause of the accident and hold responsible parties accountable. The suspected sabotage and tampering raise serious concerns about the safety and security of the railway infrastructure. Efforts will be made to enhance security measures and prevent such incidents in the future, ensuring the safety of passengers and the smooth functioning of the railway network.
