Assam's United Opposition Front Faces Tension Over Raijor Dal Chief's Comments
Tensions have emerged within the United Opposition Front Assam (UOFA) following a controversial interview given by Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi. The state Congress president, Bhupen Bora, expressed his discontent through a letter addressed to Gogoi, accusing him of showing disrespect towards the Congress leaders' efforts during the Lok Sabha polls in Assam.

Bora's letter, sent on Friday to the Sivasagar MLA, highlighted the collective annoyance of Congress leaders and workers towards Gogoi's remarks. Gogoi had suggested in a local daily that it was the candidates, rather than the party leaders, who had exerted significant effort during the election period. Bora countered this by emphasizing the integral role of Congress's grassroots organizations and leadership in organizing campaign meetings.
The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) chief also reminded Gogoi of the support extended by the party's high command during the elections. Notable figures such as Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, and AICC Assam in-charge Jitendra Singh had all participated in campaigning efforts across Assam.
Bora's letter further pointed out that the selection of strong candidates was a testament to both APCC's recommendations and AICC's final selections, underscoring the organizational strength of Congress. He warned Gogoi of potential repercussions if his comments were not retracted or corrected, urging him to refrain from making disparaging remarks about Congress in the future.
While Gogoi has not yet responded to Bora's letter, Raijor Dal's working president Bhasco de Saikia conveyed that the letter had caused disappointment and confusion among members of both Raijor Dal and Congress. He noted that despite not fielding any candidates in the Lok Sabha elections, Raijor Dal had actively supported UOFA candidates. Saikia also mentioned that Gogoi's interview included criticisms of the BJP but lamented that certain individuals are keen on sowing discord within the united opposition ahead of the 2026 elections.
This incident underscores the fragile nature of alliances within political fronts, especially when internal communications misalign with public statements. The unfolding situation between APCC and Raijor Dal highlights the challenges faced by coalition partners in maintaining a unified stance while respecting each entity's contributions and perspectives.
