Assam Elections 2021: The Only Independent Winner Who Made History

The 2021 Assam Legislative Assembly elections were largely dominated by two major alliances the BJP-led NDA and the Congress-led Mahajot. Out of the total 126 seats, almost all were won by candidates from these alliances.

However, one result stood out. Only one Independent candidate managed to win a seat, making it a rare and remarkable outcome in a highly competitive election.

Although he had formed his own political party, it was not officially recognised by the Election Commission at the time. As a result, he contested the election as an Independent candidate.

What made Akhil Gogoi's victory even more significant was the fact that he contested and won the election while being in jail.

He had been in custody since December 2019 in connection with cases related to the anti-CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) protests. Despite this, he managed to gain strong public support and win the election.

This made his victory one of the most unique and talked-about moments of the Assam elections.

Winning Margin and Key Contest

Akhil Gogoi won the Sibsagar seat by a margin of 11,875 votes, defeating BJP candidate Surabhi Rajkonwar.

The result showed that voters in the constituency backed him strongly, even in challenging circumstances.

Role After the Election

After his victory, Akhil Gogoi was later released from jail and took his place as a member of the Assam Legislative Assembly. He has since been active as a vocal opposition leader, raising issues related to public welfare and governance.

Dominance of Major Alliances

While Gogoi's win was historic, it was also an exception. The rest of the seats were largely divided between:

• NDA (BJP, AGP, UPPL)
• Mahajot (Congress, AIUDF, BPF, CPI-M)

This highlights how strong alliance politics was in Assam during the 2021 elections, leaving very little space for Independent candidates.
