Arogya Sakhi App Launch: UNICEF And FOGSI Unite To Debunk Myths, Promote Women’s Health
The Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI) launched a free women-centric mobile app, Arogya Sakhi, on Thursday to raise awareness about women's health issues, according to a Hindustan Times report. Representing approximately 46,000 obstetricians and gynaecologists across India, FOGSI aims to provide accurate and verified medical information to women through this app, which is funded by UNICEF. The app will be available for download starting 10 January and will focus on topics like cervical cancer, vaccinations, menopause, and pregnancy.
As per the HT report, Dr Sunita Tandulwadkar, the new FOGSI president, emphasised the need for an app like Arogya Sakhi in a society where self-diagnoses and self-medication are widespread. "This app offers accurate information verified by doctors, which is essential as online searches often lead to unauthenticated sources," she explained. She also noted that misinformation from non-verified websites complicates treatments, as patients often believe the myths they encounter online.

Arogya Sakhi is designed to cater to women of all age groups, addressing their everyday health queries. For instance, it provides solutions to common concerns, such as safe medications during pregnancy or whether certain foods are advisable. The app also raises awareness about cervical cancer vaccinations and highlights UNICEF and FOGSI-run health programmes. It is especially helpful for those who experience mild symptoms but may not immediately visit a doctor. However, Dr Tandulwadkar advised seeking professional help for severe symptoms.
The app also includes a doctor-finder tool to help users locate the nearest FOGSI-certified doctors for consultations. Future updates will allow users to take online consultations directly through the app, making healthcare more accessible.
Arogya Sakhi is a step forward in providing women with reliable medical information and support, empowering them to make informed decisions about their health.
