Anand Sharma Defends Priyanka Gandhi Against Yogi Adityanath's Criticism Over Palestinian Support
Former Union minister Anand Sharma criticised Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for his comments on Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's support for Palestinians. Sharma stated that Adityanath's remarks were unjustified and contradicted India's longstanding stance on Palestine. This response followed Adityanath's veiled criticism of Priyanka Gandhi for carrying a handbag with "Palestine" written on it to Parliament.

During the Winter Session of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly, Adityanath commented on Priyanka Gandhi's handbag, saying, "Yesterday, a Congress leader was seen walking around Parliament carrying a Palestine bag, while we are sending our youth to Israel for opportunities." He highlighted that over 5,600 youths from Uttar Pradesh have gone to Israel for construction jobs, receiving free food, accommodation, and a monthly salary of Rs 1.5 lakh.
India's Position on Palestine
Anand Sharma emphasised that Yogi Adityanath's criticism conflicts with India's firm position on Palestine at the United Nations. India supports establishing a sovereign Palestinian state within secure borders. Sharma pointed out that India is part of recent declarations by G20 countries in Rio and the BRICS Summit in Kazan, both attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. These declarations expressed concern over the humanitarian situation in Gaza and reaffirmed support for Palestinian rights.
Sharma also noted that India is providing humanitarian aid to Gaza. He urged Adityanath to either retract his comments or clarify if he opposes the Indian government's stance. Sharma said, "Yogi and BJP leaders should be made aware that India is also a party to the recent declarations of G20 Countries in Rio Brazil and the BRICS Summit in Kazan - both attended by PM Narendra Modi, expressing deep concern over the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza and reaffirming the right of Palestinian people and creation of state of Palestine as per UN Resolutions."
Priyanka Gandhi's Response
In response to Adityanath's remarks, Priyanka Gandhi criticised sending youths to Israel for work amid conflict. She stated that sending young people into a war zone is not an achievement but a matter of shame. Her comments highlight concerns about prioritising employment opportunities over safety in conflict areas.
The ongoing debate underscores differing views within Indian politics regarding international issues like the Israel-Palestine conflict. While some leaders focus on employment opportunities abroad, others stress humanitarian concerns and India's diplomatic positions.
This exchange between political figures reflects broader discussions about India's role in global affairs and its commitment to supporting peace efforts in regions like Palestine.
