Al Jazeera Publishes Bogus Report on IAF Female Pilot In Pakistan's Custody: Here's the Truth
In yet another embarrassing episode of misinformation, Qatar-based media outlet Al Jazeera recently ran a sensational story claiming that Indian Air Force (IAF) pilot Squadron Leader Shivani Singh had been captured by Pakistani forces. The story, initially attributed to unnamed Pakistani military sources, has now been thoroughly debunked - not just by India but by Pakistan's own army.

The Viral Misinformation
The rumour started spreading on May 9 when Al Jazeera reported, without any verification, that the Pakistan Army had taken into custody an Indian pilot after shooting down a Rafale fighter jet. The pilot, according to the false report, was identified as Squadron Leader Shivani Singh.
Despite the lack of evidence - no footage, no official confirmation, no proof of a downed aircraft - the story spread rapidly across pro-Pakistan social media channels, with many users celebrating what they believed to be a military success.
In an unexpected twist, the Director General of Pakistan's Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Maj. Gen. Ahmed Sharif Chaudhary, dismissed the claim outright during a press briefing on May 11. When asked about the alleged capture, he clarified:
"I can confirm that we do not have any Indian pilot in our custody. This is simply social media chatter and nothing more. It's part of a wave of fake news coming from multiple sources."
This statement from Pakistan's own military dismantled the narrative that had been circulating online and discredited Al Jazeera's reporting.
India's Press Information Bureau (PIB) also stepped in to fact-check the claim. Through its official channels, PIB declared the news to be completely false, stating:
"Indian Female Air Force pilot has NOT been captured. Pro-Pakistan social media handles claim that an Indian Female Air Force pilot, Squadron Leader Shivani Singh, has been captured in Pakistan. This claim is FAKE!"
This incident is not an isolated one. Time and again, media platforms sympathetic to certain geopolitical interests have amplified baseless rumours without verifying the facts. In this case, not only was the claim false, but it also endangered the reputation of a professional officer and misled the public on a sensitive matter.
