Air India To Suspend Delhi–Washington Flights From September 1 Amid Fleet Retrofit

Air India has confirmed it will suspend its flight services between Delhi and Washington, DC, starting September 1, 2025, due to a combination of "operational factors." The airline stated that the primary reason for this decision is the temporary unavailability of several Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft, which are undergoing an extensive retrofit programme.

The suspension comes in the wake of a major aviation tragedy that occurred just two months ago. On June 12, a London-bound Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner operated by Air India crashed in Ahmedabad shortly after take-off. The devastating accident claimed the lives of nearly everyone on board, with only one survivor among the 242 passengers and crew. The incident drew widespread attention to the airline's safety protocols and fleet management.

In its official statement, Air India explained that the pause in operations is aimed at ensuring the "reliability and integrity of the overall route network." The airline began retrofitting 26 of its Boeing 787-8 aircraft last month as part of a fleet upgrade plan designed to improve passenger comfort, safety standards, and operational efficiency. This large-scale retrofit has temporarily reduced the number of aircraft available for long-haul international routes.

While the Delhi-Washington route has been popular among travelers for both business and leisure purposes, the airline emphasized that this measure is temporary and necessary to maintain consistent service across other critical routes. Passengers who have booked tickets on the affected flights will be offered alternative travel arrangements or refunds, Air India assured.

The suspension highlights the operational challenges airlines face when balancing fleet upgrades with route commitments, especially in the aftermath of a significant accident. Air India has not yet announced when the Delhi-Washington service will resume, but the airline says it remains committed to restoring the route once its retrofitted Dreamliners are back in service.
