Aero India 2025: How the U.S.-India Defense Partnership Has Strengthened Over Time
The United States and India continue to strengthen their strategic defense partnership, fostering security, stability, and economic growth in the Indo-Pacific region. Over the years, both nations have deepened military cooperation through key agreements and joint exercises, reinforcing their commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific.
Growing Defense Cooperation
The U.S. designated India as a Major Defense Partner in 2016, elevating its access to advanced military technologies. By 2018, India was granted Strategic Trade Authorization Tier 1 status, enabling streamlined access to sensitive defense equipment. Several key agreements, including LEMOA (Logistics Exchange Memorandum of Agreement), COMCASA (Communications Compatibility and Security Agreement), and ISA (Industrial Security Agreement), have further strengthened bilateral defense trade.

In 2024, the U.S. approved significant defense sales to India, including MQ-9B Remotely Piloted Aircraft, MK 54 MOD 0 Lightweight Torpedoes, Anti-Submarine Warfare Sonobuoys, and MH-60R Multi-Mission Helicopter Equipment. Additionally, the two nations conducted Tiger Triumph, a joint tri-service military exercise, improving interoperability and disaster response capabilities in the Indian Ocean. India also remains an active participant in major naval drills like RIMPAC and Malabar, reinforcing regional security alongside the U.S. and Japan.
