IPS officer Aditya Kumar, wanted in a case related to his alleged involvement with liquor mafias in Bihar, surrendered before a court in Patna on Tuesday. He was on the run for over a year.
Patna, Dec 5: In a significant development, IPS officer Aditya Kumar, who was wanted in a case related to his alleged involvement with liquor mafias in Bihar, surrendered before a court in Patna on Tuesday. The 2011-batch IPS officer had been on the run for over a year, evading arrest in the case pertaining to his alleged collusion with liquor mafias during his tenure as the senior superintendent of police in Gaya district, a dry region in the state, officials said.
Accused of Taking Help of Criminal
Kumar is accused of taking the assistance of a criminal to have a liquor case against him closed. One Abhishek Agarwal allegedly made several phone calls to the then DGP SK Singhal, posing as the chief justice of the Patna High Court, requesting him to drop the case against Kumar. These startling revelations have come to light during the course of the investigation.
Surrendered After Denial of Bail
Following the denial of bail in connection with a separate criminal conspiracy case against him, Kumar decided to surrender before the court. A senior officer of the Economic Offences Unit (EOU) of the state police informed that he has been remanded to 14-day judicial custody by the court. The EOU intends to seek his custody shortly to conduct further investigations into the case.
Evading Summons
Despite repeated summons issued by the investigating agency, Kumar had been persistently avoiding appearance. His involvement in the liquor mafia scandal came to light after thorough investigations, leading to his suspension from service.
The surrender of IPS officer Aditya Kumar marks a crucial development in the ongoing probe into the liquor mafia nexus in Bihar. The EOU's pursuit of his custody underscores their determination to unravel the full extent of his alleged involvement and bring justice in the case. The developments in this high-profile case will be closely monitored as the investigation unfolds.
