Kolkata, February 16: Senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Abhishek Banerjee took charge on Friday to assess the party's readiness for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. He urged elected representatives to launch a campaign against the central government over alleged financial restrictions imposed on the state.
Campaign Against Fund Withholding
During a virtual meeting with TMC Members of Parliament (MPs) and Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), Banerjee called for an extensive campaign against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Union government's decision to withhold funds. "Our national general secretary, Abhishek Banerjee, took stock of the party's preparedness for the upcoming polls during the virtual meeting. He instructed us to strengthen the organization from the booth level," said a TMC leader who wished to remain anonymous.
Addressing Unrest in Sandeshkhali
Banerjee addressed the ongoing unrest in the Sandeshkhali block of North 24 Parganas district, blaming the opposition for instigating trouble in the area. "The opposition is creating unrest in the region and attempting to tarnish the reputation of the entire party and the state administration," the leader added.
Questioning Inaction in Uttar Dinajpur
Banerjee expressed concern over the lack of protests regarding the deaths of four children in Uttar Dinajpur's Chopra due to alleged negligence by the Border Security Force (BSF). He highlighted the prompt visit of Governor C.V. Ananda Bose to Sandeshkhali but questioned why he had not yet visited Chopra.
Emphasizing Women's Rights
Banerjee also instructed party leaders to highlight instances where women TMC leaders were physically mistreated by the Delhi Police during a protest over the withholding of MGNREGA payments in October 2022.
As the Lok Sabha elections draw near, the TMC, under the leadership of Abhishek Banerjee, is taking proactive steps to strengthen its position and address key issues affecting the state. By launching campaigns against the Centre's alleged financial blockade and emphasizing women's rights, the party aims to garner support and consolidate its base in West Bengal.
