Telangana Brings AI To Highways; Hyderabad-Vijayawada NH Expansion Gets Major Boost

The Telangana government is set to introduce artificial intelligence-driven monitoring systems across key national highway projects under construction, signalling a major shift towards smarter and safer road infrastructure in the state.

Alongside this technology push, the government has also cleared a series of road expansion works in Khammam district, including a major allocation for the Hyderabad-Vijayawada National Highway stretch between Wyra and Jaggayyapeta.

Rs 594 Crore Approved For Five Key Road Projects In Khammam

Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka announced that the state government has approved Rs 594 crore for the expansion of five major road stretches in Khammam district, covering a total distance of 100.82 km. These projects will be taken up under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM), a public-private partnership model commonly used for highway development across India.

One of the biggest projects in this package is the widening of the Hyderabad-Vijayawada National Highway between Wyra and Jaggayyapeta, which has been allotted Rs 151.2 crore.

Apart from this, four other stretches in the region will also be widened into four-lane roads. These include a 13.5 km stretch in Madhira with an allocation of Rs 81 crore, an 18.4 km stretch from Madhira to Errupalem for Rs 110.4 crore, a 28.03 km stretch up to Bonakal for Rs 157.23 crore, and a 15.72 km stretch from Bonakal to Vangaveedu for Rs 94.32 crore.

Officials expect these projects to strengthen regional connectivity and bring down travel time for commuters and transporters using these routes regularly.

AI-Based Monitoring Planned On 232-Km Hyderabad-Vijayawada Stretch

In a major technological upgrade, the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for expanding the Hyderabad-Vijayawada highway from four lanes to six lanes includes plans to deploy AI-based systems across the full 232-km stretch.

The proposed system will operate through a network of CCTV cameras installed along the highway, all linked to a central command and control centre. Using AI, the cameras will monitor traffic movement in real time, detect overspeeding vehicles, and automatically identify vehicle number plates.

Once a traffic violation is detected, challans will be generated and issued directly to the vehicle owner without the need for manual intervention. The move is aimed at ensuring stricter enforcement of traffic rules while making monitoring more efficient.

Pilot Project Success Encourages Wider Rollout

The decision to introduce AI-powered systems on upcoming highway projects comes after encouraging results from a pilot already implemented on the four-lane Khammam-Devarapalli access-controlled greenfield highway.

Authorities had deployed AI-based safety and surveillance systems on that corridor to improve monitoring and reduce accident risks. With the pilot showing positive outcomes, the state is now looking to replicate similar high-tech solutions in other National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) projects under development in Telangana.

This marks a broader policy shift, with technology now becoming a core part of road planning rather than just an add-on feature.

Focus On Safer Travel And Better Traffic Flow

The introduction of AI-driven monitoring is expected to play a significant role in improving road safety across Telangana's expanding highway network. By instantly tracking vehicle speeds and flagging violations, officials hope the system will help reduce accidents and encourage better driving discipline.

Beyond enforcement, the technology is also expected to improve traffic management by giving authorities real-time visibility into vehicle movement, congestion points and highway conditions. This could help ease bottlenecks and improve the overall travel experience for daily commuters and long-distance travellers.

At the same time, road construction is also gathering pace in rural areas, with funds being routed through gram panchayats and the state government stepping up its infrastructure focus. From AI-enabled national highways to improved village connectivity, Telangana's latest road push reflects a larger effort to modernise its transport network and support economic growth across urban and rural regions alike.
