Newlywed Man Kidnapped, Assaulted and Humiliated by In-Laws in Eluru

A disturbing incident from Andhra Pradesh has sparked outrage after a newly married man was allegedly abducted, humiliated and assaulted in public by his wife's relatives for marrying against their wishes.

The incident occurred in Eluru district, just days after the couple tied the knot under police protection.

Marriage Opposed Despite Eight-Year Relationship

The couple, Sai Chand and Sai Durga, had been in a relationship for nearly eight years. Despite their long association, Sai Durga's family reportedly refused to accept the marriage. Left with no option, the couple approached the police and got married a few days ago with official protection.

While Sai Chand's parents attended the wedding, members of Sai Durga's family chose to stay away, signalling their continued opposition to the union.

Assault Caught on Camera, Video Goes Viral

The situation took a violent turn soon after the marriage. According to the police, Sai Durga's relatives allegedly tracked down Sai Chand and abducted him. A video that later surfaced online shows the young man being dragged by his hair, tied to an electricity pole and repeatedly slapped and beaten in full public view.

The visuals triggered widespread condemnation, with many questioning the safety of couples who marry by choice despite legal safeguards.

Police Cite Employment Dispute as Trigger

Explaining the possible motive behind the attack, Eluru Superintendent of Police Shiva Pratap Kishore said the opposition appeared to be linked to employment differences between the couple.

"The parents of Sai Durga did not agree, it appears, because she was working with the postal department while Sai Chand was still unemployed," Eluru SP Shiva Pratap Kishore said.

Case Registered, Couple Given Protection

The police have registered a case of kidnapping and assault against the accused and launched a detailed investigation into the matter. Officials have also stepped up security for the newly married couple.

"We have registered a case of kidnapping and assault. No one is permitted to bypass the legal system to settle personal or familial grievances," SP Kishore added.

Authorities have assured strict action against those involved, reiterating that acts of violence in the name of family honour will not be tolerated.
