Azharuddin’s Name Removed From Hyderabad Stadium Stand After Ethics Violation Ruling
Mohammed Azharuddin, the former captain of India's cricket team, has been given a serious blow when the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) was ordered to take his name from the North Pavilion Stand at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Uppal, Hyderabad. HCA's ethics officer and ombudsman, Justice V. Eswaraiah, issued the directive, which also directs the organization to stop issuing tickets with Azharuddin's name on them.
Conflict of Interest Behind Name Removal
As per a Cricbuzz report, the decision stems from a conflict of interest claim. In 2019, while Azharuddin served as the President of the Hyderabad Cricket Association, a resolution during an apex council meeting resulted in renaming the North Pavilion Stand from "WS Laxman Pavilion" to "Mohammed Azharuddin Stand." However, critics argue that this decision violated HCA's own governance norms.

According to Rule 38, no member of the apex council is permitted to take decisions that directly benefit themselves. This was a central point in a complaint filed by Hyderabad's Lords Cricket Club (LCC) on February 28, 2025, demanding Azharuddin's name be removed due to a conflict of interest.
Ethics Officer's Detailed Verdict
In a 25-page judgment, Justice Eswaraiah stated that the absence of ratification or modification by the general body further supported the case against Azharuddin. The verdict concluded that the former cricketer, referred to as Respondent No. 1, had exceeded his authority and acted in a manner that directly benefited himself.
The ombudsman's ruling ensures that the North Pavilion Stand should revert to its original title - WS Laxman Pavilion - for all practical purposes. Furthermore, the ethics officer emphasized that the high-handed approach in renaming the stand without proper procedure needed to be rectified in the interest of transparency and good governance.
Lords Cricket Club Welcomes the Decision
Following the announcement, the Lords Cricket Club expressed satisfaction over the ruling. Speaking to Sportstar, the club's treasurer Somna Misra stated, "This decision reinforces our commitment to transparency and integrity. We thank the authorities for their fair and just evaluation."
The Hyderabad Cricket Association will now be expected to fully implement the directive and refrain from any future activities that may appear to breach its own governance rules or create ethical conflicts within its leadership structure.
