Election Commission Decision Leads To Pension Distribution Delays In Andhra Pradesh
The recent changes in pension distribution in Andhra Pradesh have sparked a political debate. The Election Commission has decided to remove volunteers from distributing pensions due to complaints, causing inconvenience for the elderly and disabled beneficiaries. These individuals are upset because their pensions, usually received on the 1st of each month, are now delayed due to the election code. This delay has led to widespread frustration among the 66 lakh beneficiaries who rely on this monthly support.

For the last five years, volunteers have played a crucial role in ensuring pensions reach beneficiaries' homes on time. However, following a complaint by the Forum for Good Governance, the Election Commission has halted this practice during the current election period in Andhra Pradesh. Officials have directed beneficiaries to collect their pensions from the nearest ward or village secretariat instead. This sudden change has not been well-received, leading to public dissatisfaction.
Since Jagan Mohan Reddy's government introduced the secretariat and volunteer system, pensions were conveniently delivered to beneficiaries' doorsteps at the start of each month. But with volunteers now sidelined, pensions expected today have not been disbursed, forcing beneficiaries to visit their local secretariat with identification on the 3rd of this month. The disruption of this service has particularly angered those who have grown accustomed to receiving their pensions without leaving their homes.
The opposition is facing criticism from beneficiaries who believe their interference is to blame for the halted pension service. Meanwhile, leaders of the ruling YSRCP argue that the complaints leading to these changes are politically motivated by supporters of Chandrababu Naidu. The situation has escalated tensions, with beneficiaries feeling caught in a political crossfire over an essential financial support system. The government attributes part of the delay to the start of a new financial year and banking schedules but has not provided a clear solution to address the immediate concerns of pension recipients.
