'Vettaiyan' Box Office Collection - Day 1: How Much Rajini-Starrer Minted In Tamil Nadu, Karnataka?

Rajinikanth's latest release, Vettaiyan, has marked a powerful opening at the Tamil Nadu box office, securing its place as the second-biggest opener in the state in 2024 with a collection of Rs 20.25 crore on its first day, as per trade reports.

However, the film couldn't surpass the business of Vijay's 'GOAT', which currently holds the top position with an opening-day record of Rs 31.56 crore.

In the ranking of top Kollywood openers, Ajith's Valimai maintains the highest opening-day earnings with Rs 34 crore, followed by GOAT and Vijay's previous hits, including Sarkar (Rs 31.5 crore), Leo (Rs 30.03 crore), and Rajinikanth's own blockbuster Jailer (Rs 26.5 crore). Also among the high grossers are Vijay's Beast (Rs 26 crore) and Bigil (Rs 25.6 crore).

On Thursday, Vettaiyan recorded a solid 59.43% occupancy across Tamil Nadu, with showtimes reaching their peak in night slots at 75.81% capacity. This contributed significantly to its national performance, as the Tamil version amassed Rs 27.75 crore across India.

Chennai led the charge, boasting the highest occupancy at 78% across 1,196 shows. Other key cities like Coimbatore followed with 73.25% occupancy from 336 shows. Bengaluru saw 41% occupancy across 1,063 shows, while Madurai recorded 51% from 207 shows. Trivandrum showed a more moderate response with 45.5% occupancy across 238 shows.

The movie drew additional collections from neighbouring states, raking in Rs 6.8 crore in Karnataka, Rs 4.5 crore in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Rs 4 crore in Kerala, and Rs 1.2 crore from other regions of India.

With a domestic gross of Rs 37 crore and an impressive overseas collection of Rs 30 crore, Vettaiyan's total worldwide earnings surged to Rs 67 crore on its opening day, setting a strong precedent for its future box-office run.
