Tamil Actress Sanam Shetty Raises Alarm Over Threat Of Deepfake Video, Files Complaint
Tamil actress Sanam Shetty has alleged that a Twitter handle has threatened to violate her modesty by creating a deepfake video.
She has requested the Chennai Cybercrime Department to take action against the miscreant. "This ID @rationalindia19 has given me an open threat of crime to violate my modesty with regard to #Deepfake video creation and distribution.Kindly take action against this person immediately to prevent such vile incidents including acts of blackmail.
Thank you. #onlineCrime #intimidation #threats #womenModesty #blackmail," she said on Twitter.

However, the said post has been deleted by the Twitter handle. Nonetheless, she has taken a screenshot of his post. Going by the screenshot shared by one of her followers, it looks like the said handle was repeatedly abused on Twitter.
In the recent past, there has been a rise in deepfake videos. Celebrities and public figures are easily targeted by miscreants as they spread fake clips about them. The debate around the issue started after a deepfake video of Rashmika Mandanna surfaced online.
The viral video showcased Rashmika's face overlaid onto footage featuring British social media influencer Zara Patel.
In the wake of Rashmika Mandanna's deepfake video controversy, the Centre directed social media companies to take action against content that breaches the rules and regulations outlined in the IT Rules 2021, ensuring adherence within specified timeframes. Also, users are cautioned against sharing or hosting such infringing information, content, or deepfakes.
Also, gaming app morphed a video of Sachin Tendulkar, initiating a false promotional campaign. The Mumbai Cyber Police filed an FIR against the app after Sachin clarified the misleading video on X, emphasizing the urgent need to report such instances. Sachin expressed concern over the widespread misuse of technology and called for vigilance and responsiveness from social media platforms. He also urged relevant government authorities to take swift action against misinformation.
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Nora Fatehi, Zerodha's Nithin Kamath, Priyanka Chopra and many others have fallen victim to the manipulated videos made from this technology.
A "deepfake" video is a manipulated clip in which a person's face or body features are digitally altered to resemble someone else. Such content is frequently used to disseminate false information or deceive the audience about a well-known individual.
