Angammal Movie Review: What's Good, What's Bad In Tamil film? Find Out

Tamil film Angammal has hit the screens on Friday. The movie stars Geetha Kailasam alongside Saran Shakthi, Thendral Raghunathan and Bharani.

Vipin Radhakrishnan-directorial film has Mohammed Maqbool Mansoor's music, Pradeep Shankar's editing and Anjoy Samuel's cinematography.

Story:
Angammal, adapted from Perumal Murugan's acclaimed short story Kodithuni, is a poignant exploration of family, freedom, and generational conflict. At its center is Angammal, a woman in her fifties who has built her home brick by brick through sheer determination and hard work. Within those walls, however, lies a simmering tension between her authority as matriarch and the shifting expectations of her children.

Her elder son Sudalai, played by Bharani, and his wife Sharadha, portrayed by Thendral Raghunathan, often endure the sharp edge of Angammal's temper. Yet, her sternness dissolves in the presence of their child. As a grandmother, she is tender and empathetic, revealing a softer side that contrasts with her otherwise uncompromising nature.

The family dynamic takes a dramatic turn when her younger son Pavalam, a doctor brought to life by Saran, introduces his girlfriend Jasmine, played by Mullaiyarasi. This revelation unsettles Angammal, forcing her to confront new realities. The situation intensifies when Pavalam, Sudalai, and Sharadha urge her to conform to social norms - to wear a blouse and present herself in ways deemed "acceptable" for Pavalam's prospective in-laws. For Angammal, these demands feel suffocating, as though the very home she built is now closing in on her.

Rajasekar: #Angammal -3.5 out of 5. Tells the story of a bold independent old woman strives hard to earn money as a milk vendor despite his younger son is a doctor, refuses to wear blouse although the entire village including her own family nudges her and stylishly smokes Suruttu.

@kailasam_geetha is excellent as Angammal who can't be categorised flawless. She has anger issues, egoistic and many times ill treats her daughter-in-law and elder son. But she's unable to cope up with the changes that the society and her family demands (or feels there is no need for any such changes).

The film also portrays the progressiveness of Angammal by showcasing her interest towards another old man in the village. While we all think that it's taboo for widowed old women (even for young widows) in villages can't have relationships , this story breaks the myth but without crossing the line!

@ActorBharani @mullai_actress have also done a good job 👍 Barani's Nadhaswaram sub plot is interesting so is the romantic track of Saran.

Director #VipinRadhakrishnan has authenticity portrayed the rural lifestyle and made Geetha Kailasam as a representative of the old women in South TN villages .
