India's top off-spinner R Ashwin surprised the cricket world by announcing his retirement from international cricket. This decision came during the ongoing Test series against Australia.

R Ashwin concluded his career as India's second-highest wicket-taker in Test matches. He secured 537 wickets in 106 games, trailing only Anil Kumble's 619 wickets. His career highlights include being part of India's victorious teams in the 2011 World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy.

As he bids goodbye to cricket, the focus also shifts towards his personal life. Notably, his wife Prithi Narayanan who has been his school-days sweetheart and has been his pillar of strength.

Ashwin and Prithi Narayanan share a long history dating back to their middle school days at Padma Sadhavan School in Chennai. In a casual chat on Jio Cinema earlier, Prithi fondly remembered how everyone knew about Ashwin's crush on her during those early years. The couple eventually married in 2011 after years of dating and now have two children together.

"We went to the same middle school together. That's how we got introduced to each other. But then, we grew up and met as adults again. I was working at an events company. He had a massive crush on me, and the whole school knew it," she was quoted as saying by India Today in 2023.

Ashwin's Proposal

Prithi shared that even after Ashwin switched schools to focus on cricket, they remained in touch through birthdays and neighbourhood interactions. Their paths crossed again when Prithi worked with Chennai Super Kings (CSK), where she saw Ashwin as a grown man.

"He moved schools to pursue cricket and we were in touch on and off, birthdays, neighbourhood, like that. I met him again when I was handling CSK's account and suddenly I saw him as a six-footer. We knew each other from Grade 7."

Recalling their unique proposal story, Prithi mentioned that Ashwin took her to a cricket ground one day. He candidly expressed his feelings by saying, "I've kinda liked you all my life and it hasn't changed over 10 years. We're adults and let's try this."

Life Beyond Cricket

Although retired from international cricket, Ashwin will continue playing club cricket, including for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL next year. Meanwhile, Prithi remains actively involved in managing Gen Next Cricket Academy and overseeing a commercial media company.

Prithi has been an unwavering support throughout Ashwin's career. She frequently shares posts appreciating him on Instagram. Her involvement extends beyond personal support as she manages various aspects of their professional ventures together.

"Today will be the last day for me as an India cricketer in all formats," Ashwin stated at a joint press conference with captain Rohit Sharma after the drawn third Test match. He declined questions following his announcement.
