However, east and northeast India saw a 22% rainfall deficit, while the southern peninsula reported a 2% shortfall during the same period. Alarmingly, rainfall in east and northeast India was the seventh lowest since 1901, and the fourth lowest since 2001.

"In northeast India, this is the fifth consecutive year of 'below normal' rainfall. Over the last 30 years, a declining trend in rainfall activity has been observed in the northeastern states," said IMD chief Mrutyunjay Mohapatra.

In July-typically the most active monsoon month-76 weather stations recorded 'extremely heavy' rainfall and 624 reported 'very heavy' rainfall events, which is lower than 193 and 1,030 stations, respectively, reported in 2024. Despite the intense spells, the month did not witness widespread flooding as seen last year. Apart from Himachal Pradesh, where flash floods and landslides occurred, no major rain-related disasters were reported across other states.

Thanks to timely and well-distributed rainfall, Kharif sowing progressed smoothly, with acreage rising by 4% till July 28 compared to last year. On the temperature front, the IMD expects "normal to below normal" maximum (day) temperatures across many parts of India in August, while "normal to above normal" minimum (night) temperatures are likely.

"However, below normal minimum temperatures are likely over some parts of northwest India," it said.
