Thevar Jayanti 2023: Traffic Diversions, Police Regulations, Attending Leaders And More

In preparation for Chief Minister M.K. Stalin's visit to Madurai, Director General of Police Shankar Jiwal, alongside senior police officials, conducted an extensive inspection of key locations in the city. The Chief Minister is set to participate in the guru puja ceremony honoring freedom fighter Muthuramalinga Thevar on Monday, 30th October.

Accompanied by Additional Director General of Police (Crime) Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal and Madurai Commissioner of Police J. Loganathan, Mr. Jiwal oversaw the security arrangements at several crucial sites. Notably, they assessed the preparations at Goripalayam junction, where leaders from various political parties and organizations are expected to pay their respects to Muthuramalinga Thevar by garlanding his statue.

The inspection continued at the statues of the Maruthu brothers in Teppakulam and the Aavin junction. The Chief Minister is slated to lay the foundation stone for a flyover at the Aavin junction on the same day.

Given the significance of the event, a substantial security force of 3,000 police personnel will be deployed in the city during Thevar Jayanthi. Thousands of people from various parts of the city and state are expected to converge at Goripalayam junction to offer their homage.

To ensure the smooth execution of the event, the police have imposed restrictions on the movement of vehicles towards Goripalayam junction on Monday. Only the cars of leaders will be permitted, while other vehicles will be redirected onto alternative routes.

In addition to this, four Deputy Commissioners of Police in Madurai City and three officers with the rank of Superintendent of Police will supervise security arrangements across different areas of the city.

Police personnel will be strategically positioned along main roads and important intersections to facilitate a trouble-free Thevar guru puja.

Outside the city, over 2,000 police personnel will be deployed in Madurai rural district, with Superintendent of Police R. Shiva Prasad and two SP-level officers overseeing the security for the Chief Minister's convoy and other leaders in rural areas.

What are the traffic regulations imposed?

To manage traffic effectively, Madurai City police have announced the suspension of truck entry into the city between 6 a.m. and 10.30 p.m. on Monday, 30th October. Vehicles coming from various directions will be diverted to ensure the smooth flow of traffic, and two-wheelers will not be permitted towards Goripalayam junction.

Here are the specific routes and diversions that will be in place:

  • Vehicles approaching from Natham Road and Alagarkoil Road will be redirected at the Periyar statue junction toward K.K. Nagar. These vehicles will follow a path through Aavin Junction, PTR Bridge, and Kamarajar Salai.
  • Vehicles traveling from Mattuthavani and Aavin Junction towards Natham Road are advised to take Race Course Road from Kakkan statue junction and Bharathi Ula Road.
  • For vehicles departing from Mattuthavani, the recommended route involves passing through K.K. Nagar, Aavin Junction, Kuruvikkaran Salai, and Kamarajar Salai to enter the city.
  • Vehicles coming from North Veli Street will be guided through Yanaikkal Bridge / New Bridge, Palam Station Road, and E.E. Road.
  • Vehicles originating from other districts, en route to Pasumpon, are encouraged to use the Ring Road, except for those with specific permits to enter the city.
  • For those intending to pay their respects to Muthuramalinga Thevar at Goripalayam, convenient parking options have been made available at Tamukkam ground or Anna bus stand or Palam Station Road junction.

This comprehensive security plan and traffic regulations aim to guarantee the safety and success of the upcoming event in Madurai, commemorating the revered freedom fighter Muthuramalinga Thevar.

The police have some stringent security measures in place including drone cameras surveillance:

  • Special Control Room: The police have established a dedicated control room within the district to monitor and coordinate security efforts effectively.
  • Prohibition of Taxis and Two-Wheelers: Taxis and two-wheelers have been banned during the event, and any violation of this regulation will be treated with utmost seriousness.
  • Drone Surveillance: Three drone cameras have been deployed for surveillance to maintain a comprehensive view of the area.
  • CCTV Network: One hundred closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras have been strategically installed in Kamudi and Pasumpon villages to enhance security monitoring.
  • Police Checkposts: Thirty-seven special police checkposts have been established to conduct vehicle checks and implement other essential security procedures.
  • Body Cameras: Three hundred body cameras have been provided to personnel responsible for patrolling public transport and identified trouble-prone areas in the region.
  • Patrolling Teams: A total of 57 two-wheelers and 53 four-wheelers will be deployed for patrolling duties on highways and at inter-district points.
  • Vehicle Passes: People planning to visit the village have been issued vehicle passes. Entry without a valid pass will not be allowed under any circumstances.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin is scheduled to visit Madurai to take part in freedom fighter Muthuramalinga Thevar's guru puja to be held on Monday, 30th October.

According to a report in TOI quoting a government release, senior ministers Duraimurugan, KN Nehru, I Periasamy and others are slated to visit Pasumpon to pay their tributes. Expelled AIADMK leaders O Panneerselvam, VK Sasikala and AMMK chief TTV Dhinakaran are scheduled to visit as well.
