Thalapathy Vijay Stands With Parandur Farmers, Vows To Fight Against Airport Project

Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president Vijay met with villagers in Ekanapuram, who have been protesting for over 900 days against the proposed greenfield airport in Parandur. Expressing solidarity, Vijay assured the farmers of his unwavering support and vowed to stand with them "till the end."

During his address, Vijay announced the commencement of his "field politics," symbolically beginning his political journey by touching the soil of the farmers' struggle. He emphasized that while he is not against development or the construction of an airport, such projects should not come at the cost of fertile farmlands and water bodies.

Criticism of DMK Government

The TVK chief criticized the ruling DMK government, questioning their selective opposition to projects. "Why oppose the tungsten project but support the Parandur airport?" he asked, alleging that the government stands to gain from the airport project. Vijay accused the regime of being "anti-people" for supporting a project that would destroy 90% of farmlands and water bodies in the region.

Farmers Present Symbolic Gifts

As a mark of gratitude, the protesting farmers presented Vijay with paddy and a green shawl. In return, Vijay reassured them of TVK's commitment, stating that his party would not hesitate to take legal action to halt the project.

"Farmers are the backbone of this country," Vijay said, emphasizing their significance and pledging to fight for their rights.

Government's Response

When asked about Vijay's visit, Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu stated that any political leader is free to meet the villagers. He assured that the government would address the grievances brought to its attention.

Thennarasu also highlighted the need for a second airport in Chennai, citing the significantly larger airport infrastructures in other major cities like Delhi (5,100 acres), Hyderabad (5,500 acres), and Bengaluru (4,000 acres), compared to Chennai's 1,000-acre facility.

Farmers' Ongoing Protest

The villagers of Parandur have remained steadfast in their opposition, expressing concerns over the environmental and agricultural impact of the proposed project. With Vijay's public support, their movement gains a significant political voice, adding momentum to their demand for reconsideration of the airport site.
