Tamil Nadu Weather: RMC Issues Heavy Rains Alert To 12 Dists; Thunderstorm Awaits Chennai Today
Heavy rainfall is set to persist across Tamil Nadu today, with the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) issuing a Yellow Alert for twelve interior districts, anticipating significant downpours. The forecast confirms the continuation of the monsoon season's intensity, even as the broader weather system influencing the region shows signs of weakening.
The RMC has named the following districts as areas expected to receive heavy rainfall today: Krishnagiri, Tirupattur, Tiruvannamalai, Dharmapuri, Salem, Kallakurichi, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Dindigai, Madurai, Sivagangai, and Tiruchirappalli.

Forecast for Chennai and KTCC Region
Beyond the Yellow Alert zones, the KTCC region-Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, Chennai, and Chengalpattu-is also expected to receive good rainfall today, weather blogger R Pradeep John note. He said in a post, "Another day of Thunderstorm awaits North Interior Tamil Nadu, KTCC (Chennai), Delta region, Sivagangai, Ramanathapuram-Pudukottai belts. Meanwhile good rains from thunderstorms recorded across Tamil Nadu and in KTCC (Chennai & Surrounding dts), this will continue today and tomorrow too."
Temperatures in Chennai are forecast to remain moderate, with the maximum temperature anticipated around 33°C and minimum temperatures expected to range between 24°C and 25°C.
Looking ahead to Friday, the heavy rain belt is predicted to shift southward, primarily impacting Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Virudhunagar, Madurai, Dindigul, and Theni districts.

Weakening Weather Systems
In its latest bulletin, the RMC provided context on the prevailing meteorological systems. The Low-Pressure Area that was over the Northeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh coast became less marked as of 17:30 hrs IST on November 5, 2025. The associated Cyclonic Circulation now persists, extending between 1.5 km and 3.1 km above mean sea level.
Furthermore, a trough previously running from the Southwest Bay of Bengal to North Kerala has now shifted, running from the Central Bay of Bengal to South Kerala, passing across Tamil Nadu at an altitude of 1.5 km to 5.8 km above mean sea level.
Wednesday's Rainfall
The preceding 24 hours saw significant rainfall in parts of the state. Tirupuvanam in Sivagangai district recorded the highest rainfall on Wednesday with 12 cms.
