Tamil Nadu Weather: Heavy Rain In 10 Dists Today; Chennai On Orange Alert As Depression Nears Coast

Tamil Nadu is bracing for another wet spell as 10 districts have been placed on alert for heavy rain today, according to the latest daily bulletin from the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai.

Five districts are under orange alert, while another five, along with Puducherry, are on yellow alert, signalling the possibility of intense rainfall and thunderstorms.

Which Districts Are on Alert?

Orange Alert (Heavy to Very Heavy Rain Likely):

• Chennai
• Tiruvallur
• Chengalpattu
• Kancheepuram
• Ranipet

Yellow Alert (Heavy Rain Likely):

• Vellore
• Tiruvannamalai
• Villupuram
• Kallakurichi
• Cuddalore
• Puducherry

RMC said light to moderate rain is expected across multiple regions, with thunderstorms and lightning likely at isolated locations, particularly over North Coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal.

Depression Near Tamil Nadu Coast, May Weaken Further

The remnant of Cyclonic Storm Ditwah-which had weakened into a deep depression on Monday-further downgraded to a depression at 5:30 am today over the southwest and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal.

• At 8:30 am, the system was located near:
• 12.8°N, 80.5°E
• Just 40 km east-southeast of Chennai
• 120 km northeast of Puducherry
• 140 km northeast of Cuddalore
• 190 km south-southeast of Nellore

The centre of the system lies barely 25 km from the north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coast, and is expected to move slowly southwestwards towards land, maintaining its depression intensity for the next 12 hours before weakening into a well-marked low pressure area.

RMC has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over:

• Coimbatore

• Tiruppur
• Tenkasi

• Salem
• Namakkal
