Most parts of Chennai experienced moderate to heavy rains on Tuesday, a trend expected to continue for the next few hours, with varying intensities from light to heavy showers.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, "Yesterday's Depression over the Southwest Bay of Bengal moved north-northwestwards, intensifying into a Deep Depression. As of 3:00 UTC on November 26, 2024, it was centered over the same region near latitude 6.3°N and longitude 82.8°E. It is approximately 310 km southeast of Trincomalee, 590 km south-southeast of Nagapattinam, 710 km south-southeast of Puducherry, and 800 km south-southeast of Chennai. The system is expected to strengthen into a Cyclonic Storm by November 27 and move further north-northwestwards, skirting the Sri Lankan coast before approaching the Tamil Nadu coast in the next two days."

Heavy rainfall has been predicted for several districts in Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Villuppuram, Cuddalore, and others. In response, authorities in Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, and Karaikal have declared holidays for schools and colleges. Thanjavur, however, has only announced a holiday for schools.

There was frustration among the public over the local administration for not taking a call.

"Why wouldn't they give a holiday for educational institutions in Chennai during such rains, especially with many roads dug up? The TN government needs to be more proactive. #ChennaiRains," one social media user vented.

Another commented, "With the condition of roads in areas like ECR and heavy rain forecast, why take a chance?"

A third user remarked, "@IMDWeather gave a red alert for Mayiladuthurai, Tiruvarur, and Nagapattinam districts, where schools and colleges were given holidays despite moderate rains. Meanwhile, Chennai got heavy rain, and students were sent home early. 😃."

The public often criticizes authorities for announcing holidays at the last minute instead of taking proactive measures. As of now, the district administration has not declared holidays for tomorrow, leaving residents anxious about the continued rainfall and road conditions.
