Tamil Nadu Google Maps Mishap Viral Video: SUV Takes Unexpected Detour, Lands At Flight Of Steps
In a peculiar turn of events, an SUV ended up in a precarious position atop a flight of stairs after the driver followed what was believed to be the "fastest route" provided by Google Maps.
The incident took place as a man was driving back to Karnataka from Gudalur, where the weekend had been spent with friends, reported Business Today.

Tamil Nadu: Google Maps Lands A SUV At Steps
Google Maps was relied upon for directions by the friends heading back to Karnataka from Gudalur, a popular vacation destination at the tri-junction of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka, frequently visited by tourists heading to Ooty.
Guided by Google Maps, the friends were directed through the Police Quarters, identified by the navigation app as the "fastest route." However, this route led them to a steep flight of stairs in a residential area.
Encountering an impasse, the man brought the vehicle to a stop on the stairs and sought help. Residents and police personnel promptly intervened, assisting the group in maneuvering the SUV back to the main road, enabling them to resume their journey back to Karnataka.
Known for calculating the fastest route based on real-time traffic data and other factors, Google Maps utilizes sophisticated algorithms like Dijkstra's and A* to determine the shortest distance between two points. Despite these advanced features, using GPS while driving poses inherent risks, akin to texting and driving, and can lead to significant dangers, Reported News 18.
Additionally, programming the GPS while the vehicle is in motion, muting the GPS sound, or looking up directions can cause distractions. Reacting to GPS instructions too late can result in mishaps, exemplified by the SUV's unfortunate detour down a staircase in this instance.
Experts caution that blindly following GPS directions may lead to being directed down unfamiliar and potentially hazardous paths. Overreliance on GPS technology can also impair the ability to store and recall spatial information, crucial for navigating unknown environments, according to Business Today.
