Tamil Nadu CM Stalin Slams LIC For Hindi Imposition On Its Website

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has criticised the use of Hindi on the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) of India's website in Tamil Nadu. He expressed his disapproval, stating that the portal has become a tool for promoting Hindi, which he views as a cultural imposition.

In a post on X, Stalin remarked, "The LIC website has been reduced to a propaganda tool for Hindi imposition. Even the option to select English is displayed in Hindi!" He emphasised that this act undermines India's cultural diversity and questioned LIC's loyalty to its contributors.

Language Imposition Concerns

Stalin demanded an immediate reversal of what he termed "linguistic tyranny," using the hashtag 'Stop Hindi Imposition'. Dr S Ramadoss, founder of Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), echoed these sentiments, describing the language switch as a blatant imposition on non-Hindi speakers.

Ramadoss stated on X, "The central government and its agencies have long tried to impose Hindi on people who speak other languages, including Tamil. Despite repeated failures, they persist. Both the central government and LIC should understand they serve all citizens, not just Hindi speakers."

Call for Language Inclusivity

The PMK leader urged LIC to change its homepage to English immediately and introduce Tamil language services. Currently, the website offers only bilingual services in Hindi and English. This call reflects ongoing concerns about preserving regional languages and cultures.

Over recent months, MK Stalin and his deputy Udhayanidhi Stalin have focused on safeguarding Tamil culture and language. In October, Stalin questioned Governor RN Ravi over a missing reference to "Dravida" in the state anthem during a function.

Political Tensions Over Language

This incident occurred during a Hindi month celebration at Doordarshan Chennai, leading to political tensions. Stalin suggested avoiding Hindi-centric events in non-Hindi speaking states and instead promoting local language celebrations.

The debate over language imposition highlights broader concerns about cultural preservation in India. As regional leaders advocate for linguistic inclusivity, tensions between central policies and state preferences continue to surface.
