Actor-politician Vijayakanth, affectionately known as Captain, passed away on December 28 due to pneumonia at a private hospital in Chennai. He was 71 and held a revered position as both an actor and a political figure in Tamil Nadu.

Vijayakanth

Born as Vijayaraj Alagarswami on August 25, 1952, to KN Alagarswami and Aandal Azhagarswami, he is survived by his wife Premalatha and two sons, Vijaya Prabhakaran and Shanmuga Pandian. Hailing from Madurai, he predominantly starred in Tamil films, which were often dubbed in Telugu and Hindi. Known as 'Puratchi Kalingar' (revolutionary artist), his career was marked by portraying patriotic roles on-screen.

Vijayakanth was celebrated as a dedicated artist and a compassionate individual, known for extending help to those who sought it.

Early in his career, he debuted in 1979 with MA Kaja's 'Inikkum Ilamai' and gained recognition in SA Chandrasekhar's 'Sattam Oru Iruttarai' two years later. His portrayal of a conscientious police officer in numerous films and his milestone 100th film, 'Captain Prabhakaran,' earned him the moniker 'Captain.'

During the 1980s, he transitioned from playing negative roles to becoming a leading actor, with significant releases like 'Om Shakti' in 1982 marking this shift. In 1984, he set a record with around 18 film releases, including the first 3D film from Kollywood, 'Annai Bhoomi 3D.' Notable films in his repertoire include 'Naane Raja Naane Mandhiri' and 'Amman Kovil Kizhakkale.'

Vijayakanth emerged as a prominent figure in Tamil cinema, standing alongside stalwarts such as Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth. He was recognized for his action-packed performances and gravity-defying stunts in crime thrillers, particularly highlighted in the film 'Sathriyan,' produced by Mani Ratnam.

His influence extended to rural areas through his roles in village-based films, notably the iconic 'Chinna Gounder' in 1992, revered as a classic to this day. Continuing into the 2000s, his success persisted with films like 'Vaanathai Pola,' 'Narasimha,' and 'Thavasi.' Notably, AR Murugadoss' 'Ramanaa' further elevated his stature as he portrayed a crusader against corruption. Throughout his three-decade-long career, he embraced diverse roles, never shying away from experimental cinema.

In 2005, he ventured into politics, founding the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK). His party gained traction swiftly, marking a significant presence in the Tamil Nadu assembly election. His dedication to not seek donations but fund his party from his own pocket earned appreciation. The DMDK contested and made an impact in various elections, notably in 2011, when they allied with AIADMK and secured 29 seats, surpassing DMK's performance.

However, rifts emerged between Vijayakanth and Jayalalithaa, leading to political shifts and challenges. His position as Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly was eventually lost. Subsequent electoral defeats, including losing his deposit and seat in the 2016 elections, marked a decline in his political journey.

Vijayakanth garnered recognition in the form of awards such as the Tamil Nadu State Film Honorary Award in 1994, the Kalaimamani Award in 2001, and the Best Indian Citizen Award in the same year. He received numerous Best Actor accolades for his remarkable performances in Tamil cinema, leaving behind a legacy cherished by his admirers.
