Chennai's First Steel Flyover: Launch Date, Budget, Lifespan & Other Details

Chennai is all set to witness a significant infrastructure milestone with the impending inauguration of its first-ever steel flyover, designed to ease the long-standing traffic congestion in the bustling T Nagar area.

Flyover Inauguration Date

The flyover, located along South Usman Road and CIT Nagar 1st Main Road, is expected to open on October 1.

Spanning 1.2 kilometers, the steel flyover will connect the ramp of the existing South Usman Road flyover to CIT Nagar 1st Main Road, ultimately linking up to the junction with CIT Nagar 4th Main Road. This strategic connection is part of a larger effort to facilitate smoother movement between Anna Salai and the commercial hub of T Nagar, enabling commuters to pass through the busy Panagal Park area in under five minutes-a sharp contrast to the often gridlocked traffic experienced today.

Flyover Budget

The entire project, estimated to cost around ₹131 crore, marks a significant technological advancement in the city's infrastructure development. Notably, this will be Chennai's-and Tamil Nadu's-second fully steel bridge, following the precedent set by the structure in Marthandam, Kanyakumari district.

Robust Engineering for Long-Term Impact

The flyover stands as an engineering marvel. Its structure comprises 53 steel piers supporting three 8.5-meter-wide girders, topped with a steel deck sheet. Above this deck lies a 20-centimeter thick concrete slab, finished with a bitumen road surface to ensure smooth and durable travel. The bridge itself rises 6.5 meters above ground level, with its underground foundation extending approximately 30 meters deep, ensuring stability and longevity.

Designed as a two-lane passage, the steel flyover is expected to have a service life of 50 years, promising long-term benefits for Chennai's ever-growing vehicular traffic. The project has progressed steadily since its launch in March 2023, with over 96% of the work already completed. Final touches such as road laying, median painting, and installation of signboards are in the pipeline, with only minor works pending.
