Chennai Metro Phase II: What the Latest Approval Means for Poonamallee–Vadapalani Commuters
A smoother ride is almost here for west Chennai. Well, Chennai Metro Rail's much-awaited Phase II services on the Poonamallee-Vadapalani stretch have crossed a crucial milestone, bringing the city one step closer to faster, cleaner and more comfortable travel.
In a major development, the Railway Board has given its final nod for trains on this corridor, paving the way for passenger services to begin as early as February, according to a report in The Hindu.

With this clearance in place, the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) now awaits only the final safety certification from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) for the stations along the route - the last formal step before welcoming commuters onboard.
A team from the CMRS recently conducted a detailed inspection of two trains that will operate on the 15-km Poonamallee-Vadapalani section, the officials told the English daily. The trains, manufactured at Sri City near Chennai, underwent rigorous checks to ensure passenger safety and operational reliability.
"Among the aspects they checked include the working of the passenger communication system in the train to see if someone can reach out to the Operation Control Centre in case of an emergency, the functioning of the smoke detectors in case of a fire, whether the safety systems are in place if there's a problem with the equipment in the underframe of the train and the traction system," the official told the daily.
Emergency preparedness was another focus area. Inspectors evaluated evacuation procedures to ensure that passengers can be safely guided to the nearest station if a train stops between stations. Simulation tests were also conducted to study train behaviour in rare scenarios such as collisions and sudden emergency braking.
Will It Be Driverless Train?
While Phase II trains are designed to be fully driverless, CMRL has decided on a cautious and commuter-friendly approach. For at least the first six months, the services will be operated by trained crew members. This will later transition to roving attendants before the system eventually goes fully automated.
The final CMRS inspection, expected in the second week of February, will focus on passenger amenities at stations between Poonamallee and Porur, as well as Vadapalani. Once cleared, commuters can look forward to using stations from Poonamallee Bypass up to Porur Junction immediately. Stations between Alapakkam and Saligramam are expected to be ready by June, with trains halting at Vadapalani in the interim.
Infrastructure work along the corridor is nearing completion. Nearly 987 pillars have been erected between Poonamallee Bypass and Vadapalani, including an eye-catching double-decker viaduct between Alwarthirunagar and Alapakkam - a testament to the scale and ambition of Chennai's expanding Metro network.
Originally planned for a December launch, the project faced minor delays due to pending speed certification.
For thousands of Chennaiites, especially those commuting daily from the city's western suburbs, the new Metro stretch promises shorter travel times, less congestion and a more relaxed start to the day - a welcome change that signals the city's steady march towards smarter urban mobility.
