Will Karnataka Extend HSRP Deadline For Installing Number Plate After September 15?
The deadline to comply with the High-Security Registration Plate (HSRP) rule is approaching fast. Vehicles must have an HSRP by September 15, or they risk significant penalties. All vehicles registered before April 1, 2019, are required to display an HSRP, with just 12 days left for drivers to comply.
The Transport Department has confirmed that no further extensions will be granted. Motorists have already had four deadlines, and the final date is fast approaching. The rule, introduced on August 17, 2023, requires strict adherence.

Currently, around 51 lakh vehicles have been fitted with the HSRP, but approximately 1.5 crore vehicles still need to comply. The Transport Department will strictly enforce this rule across Karnataka, including Bengaluru. Failure to comply by September 15 will result in a fine of Rs 500 for the first offence and Rs 1,000 for repeat offences.
Additional Transport Commissioner Mallikarjun warned that officials would actively monitor vehicles to ensure compliance with the regulation.
Motorists are urged to act quickly and avoid the last-minute rush, as the final deadline approaches with no further extensions.
The Karnataka government had extended the HSRP deadline from February 17th to September 15, 2024. With just 12 days left, vehicle owners seem indifferent. The previous extension saw a modest uptake of 1.8 million registrations. While current numbers are better, they still lag behind the total vehicles needing HSRP. This indifference raises questions about the government's next move.
