Namma Metro Purple Line Disruption: Man Dies After Jumping in Front of Train at Kengeri, Services Suspended

Train operations on Bengaluru's Namma Metro Purple Line were temporarily disrupted on Thursday morning after a man reportedly jumped in front of a moving train at Kengeri station, resulting in his immediate death. The incident led to a suspension of services between Mysuru Road and Challaghatta, affecting thousands of commuters during peak hours. Services were fully restored between Jnana Bharathi and Challaghatta by 9:40 am, and train operations across the entire Purple Line are now running as per schedule.

Kengeri police arrived promptly at the scene to investigate. Officials are working to identify the deceased, estimated to be between 35 and 40 years old. While no identification documents were recovered, a mobile phone and some cash were found, and authorities are attempting to contact his family using the numbers stored on the device.

CCTV footage reportedly shows the man jumping from the platform onto the tracks as the train approached. Police have stated that there are no indications of foul play and the incident is being treated as a suspected suicide.

In response, Namma Metro posted on X (formerly Twitter) that operations would resume after safety checks and clearance of the tracks. Officials also expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to passengers.

The disruption forced commuters from Kengeri, RR Nagar, Rajarajeshwari Nagar, Vijayanagar, and nearby areas to rely on BMTC buses, leading to heavy crowding across multiple routes.

Experts have highlighted a concerning trend of suicides on the Purple Line, with five reported cases in 2024 alone. They stress the need for improved safety measures and mental health support for public transport users.

Police continue their investigation, and further details are expected once authorities complete their inquiries.
