Nagara Metered Auto App Takes On Ola and Uber’s Price Hikes During Rain And Rush Hours
In a bid to standardize fares, the Karnataka Transport Department has enforced rules requiring Ola and Uber autos to charge passengers a uniform rate per kilometer. However, passengers have faced an issue where the aggregator companies double the fare during rains or peak hours. This has led to dissatisfaction, prompting two youths to develop a solution - the Nagara Metered Auto app.
According to RTO regulations, auto companies with an aggregator license must charge a minimum of Rs 30 for the first two kilometers and Rs 15 for every subsequent kilometer. However, some companies have been charging higher fares, particularly during adverse weather or rush hours, which has sparked concern among both passengers and drivers.

The new Nagara Metered Auto app, created by Niranjan and Shivu, is designed to adhere to these government-set fare rules. The app ensures that auto and cab drivers collect fares strictly according to the RTO guidelines. It has already gained popularity, with 6,500 auto owners in the city installing the app to ensure transparency and fairness.
Shant Gowda, an auto driver, shared his experience with the app, stating that while other apps like Ola, Uber, and Rapido initially offered incentives to drivers, they have recently increased fares, resulting in drivers receiving less money. He emphasized that the City Meter app eliminates these issues by providing drivers with the fare as per the meter reading, with no additional lures or incentives.
Under the aggregator system, auto and cab drivers are obligated to pay a daily fee of Rs 50, regardless of whether they work or not. In contrast, the City Meter app does not charge drivers any fees, making it an attractive alternative.
One passenger, who used the Nagara Metered Auto app, expressed satisfaction, saying the fares were significantly lower than those on other apps. For example, a ride that would cost Rs 100 on Uber cost her only Rs 75 on the City Meter app.
Despite the convenience provided by aggregator companies, the unfair practice of overcharging during peak times and rains has caused frustration among passengers. The Nagara Metered Auto app is emerging as a promising solution to bring more fairness and transparency to the auto and cab service industry in the city.
