Mumps Virus Spreading Among Bengaluru Kids, Parents Urged To Stay Vigilant

A rise in mumps cases has been reported among children in Bengaluru, causing concerns among parents. While the exact reasons for this increase are still under investigation, some believe it could be due to lower vaccination rates.

Mumps is a highly contagious viral infection, and vaccination is the most effective way to prevent it. The MMR vaccine, which protects against measles, mumps, and rubella, is recommended for all children. However, according to reports, only the MR vaccine, which excludes rubella, is currently being administered in some parts of Karnataka. This could leave children vulnerable to mumps.

Symptoms and Concerns:

Symptoms of mumps include fever, swollen salivary glands (particularly near the ears), fatigue, muscle aches, and loss of appetite. In some cases, complications like orchitis (testicular swelling) and meningitis can occur. Early diagnosis and proper treatment are crucial to prevent complications.

What Parents Can Do:

  • Check vaccination records: Ensure your child is up-to-date on vaccinations, including the MMR vaccine. If unsure, contact your child's pediatrician.
  • Practice hygiene: Teach your child frequent handwashing and cough etiquette to prevent the spread of the virus.
  • Monitor symptoms: Be aware of the symptoms of mumps and contact your doctor if you suspect your child may be infected.
