Movie Ticket Price in Karnataka Set for Change: ₹200 Cap Across All Screens Proposed
In a move aimed at making cinema more affordable and accessible to all, the Karnataka government has proposed a cap of ₹200 on movie ticket prices across the state. The proposal, introduced by the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government, suggests that viewers should not be charged more than ₹200 per show, regardless of the language of the film or the type of theatre.
According to a draft amendment to the Karnataka Cinemas (Regulation) Rules, 2014, the Home Department has proposed this price ceiling to apply uniformly across single-screen cinemas and multiplexes.

The draft notification, titled Karnataka Cinemas (Regulation) (Amendment) Rules, 2025, has been made public for feedback. It states:
"In rule 55, in sub-rule (6), the following proviso shall be inserted - Provided that the cost of the ticket of each show in all theatres of the state, including multiplexes, for all language films shall not exceed ₹200 inclusive of entertainment tax."
This means that ₹200 would be the maximum chargeable ticket price, inclusive of entertainment tax, no matter the format, screen size, or movie language.
Public Feedback Invited
As per the draft rules, citizens will have 15 days from the publication of the notification in the Official Gazette to submit their suggestions, objections, or feedback.
Rule 146 to Be Removed
The government has also proposed the removal of Rule 146 from the existing regulation, though the specific impact of this deletion has not been detailed in the draft. The clause and its related entries are expected to be omitted once the amendment is finalized.
Relief for Moviegoers
If implemented, this change is likely to standardize ticket pricing across Karnataka, potentially reducing inflated ticket rates during high-demand movie releases. It could also help:
Reduce the cost burden on families and regular moviegoers
Make premium cinema experiences more accessible
Promote regional films and smaller productions on a level playing field
What Happens Next?
The draft will be reviewed after public consultation. If approved, the revised rules could soon come into effect, bringing a uniform movie ticket pricing structure across Karnataka.
