Lingayat Community's Demand for Separate Identity Sparks Political Tension in Karnataka

The Lingayat community's demand for recognition as a distinct religious identity has reignited political tensions in Karnataka. The Veerashaiva-Lingayat Mahasabha has criticised the Karnataka State Backward Classes Commission for errors in its caste list, sparking controversy within the BJP, a party that has historically relied on Lingayat support. Former Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa is leading a meeting with Lingayat leaders in Bengaluru to address these concerns and mediate the growing unrest.

Senior BJP leader Basavaraj Bommai has accused the Mahasabha of being influenced by Congress, referring to it as a "Congress Mahasabha." He claims the organisation serves Congress's interests rather than those of the Lingayat community, highlighting the political nature of the debate and internal challenges facing the BJP.

The Mahasabha has requested recognition as Veerashaiva-Lingayats during the upcoming Karnataka caste census, scheduled from September 22 to October 7, at a cost of approximately Rs 420 crore. The community has also raised concerns about inconsistencies in the caste and sub-caste listings published by the Karnataka State Backward Classes Commission, questioning why nearly 40 additional castes were included, expanding the list from 79 to 135 entries.

This situation presents a delicate challenge for the BJP, which must balance the demands of the Lingayat community with the need to maintain support among other voter bases. The Mahasabha has also emphasised the importance of transparency in self-declared caste data and requested assurances that personal information will not be misused for government certificates without public review.

The outcome of the meeting chaired by B.S. Yediyurappa is expected to influence the BJP's strategy in Karnataka. As Lingayat seers urge their followers to identify as a separate religion, political leaders aim to maintain party unity while addressing the community's demands. This ongoing debate highlights deeper divisions within Karnataka politics and raises broader questions about identity and representation in India's diverse society.
