Karnataka Weather Alert: Is Bengaluru Rains Finally On The Way? Check Weather Forecast For This Week
Karnataka Weather Alert: The scorching sun has been relentless on Bengalureans in recent weeks, with the city's typically pleasant weather nowhere in sight. Coupled with Bengaluru's ongoing water crisis, residents are left pondering one pressing question: when will the much-needed rain arrive?
Thankfully, if weather models are any indication, the wait might soon be over! Parts of South Peninsular India, particularly Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, have already begun experiencing weekend rainfall. Following light showers in North Interior Karnataka on Sunday, Bengaluru and the rest of South Interior Karnataka are forecasted to experience wet weather starting this Wednesday (March 20).

When Will Bengaluru See Rain? Weather Forecast
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts light rains in districts including Chamarajanagar, Chikkamagaluru, Dakshina Kannada, Hassan, Kodagu, Mandya, Mysuru, Tumkur, and Bengaluru from Wednesday to Sunday (March 20-23).
The weather department has predicted light rain in isolated areas of North Interior Karnataka, with dry weather expected in Coastal Karnataka and South Interior Karnataka. Additionally, the maximum temperature is likely to be 2-3 degrees Celsius above normal in certain parts of Interior Karnataka, including Bagalkote, Koppal, Bengaluru Rural, Kolar, and Mysuru districts.
While the upcoming showers will bring relief, they are unlikely to lower mercury levels, currently 1-2 notches above normal. However, they could significantly help alleviate the region's water scarcity by replenishing the Cauvery Delta.
According to the Central Water Commission, Karnataka's 16 major reservoirs are only 29% full compared to last year's 45%. Twelve of these reservoirs have water levels lower than the 10-year average of 40%, as reported by The Hindu.
Karnataka typically receives decent pre-monsoon rains between March and May. However, despite 18 days of heavy rainfall in Interior Karnataka last year, the drying El Niño phenomenon resulted in rainfall scarcities across the state in 2023, a situation that still persists.
While the rest of the pre-monsoon months remain uncertain, March 2024 has been disappointingly dry so far, with Karnataka recording a significant rainfall shortfall between March 1 and 17.
The upcoming rains are expected to kick off pre-monsoon showers in Bengaluru and South Interior Karnataka. Reports suggest that regional rainfall intensities may increase towards the end of March and the beginning of April, potentially affecting Ugadi celebrations.
Moreover, the prospect of a La Niña event, often linked to above-normal monsoon rains, brings hope for good monsoon rainfall in Karnataka this year. Current projections from NOAA indicate an 83% chance of La Niña becoming active between April and June.
