Karnataka Honors Vikas Khanna For Introducing Mysore Sandal Soap To Anne Hathaway
Karnataka is set to express its gratitude to renowned chef Vikas Khanna for introducing the iconic Mysore Sandal Soap to Hollywood star Anne Hathaway and the world. The state's Industries Minister, MB Patil, has announced plans to send Khanna a special hamper in recognition of his efforts in promoting Karnataka's cultural and heritage products on an international stage.
Khanna's gesture of gifting Mysore Sandal Soap, a symbol of Karnataka's craftsmanship, to Anne Hathaway has drawn admiration. Alongside the soap, he also presented a handcrafted marble box from Agra and the book Kiss in Kashmir. This thoughtful act has elevated the soap's reputation, spreading awareness about Karnataka's rich heritage globally.

Minister Patil expressed his appreciation for Khanna, saying, "Vikas Khanna's initiative to present Mysore Sandal Soap to international celebrities is commendable. To express our gratitude, we have curated a special hamper featuring products from Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Limited (KSDL), the makers of this iconic soap."
Mysore Sandal Soap: A Symbol of Karnataka's Heritage
Mysore Sandal Soap, manufactured by KSDL, has long been a symbol of Karnataka's rich legacy and craftsmanship. The soap has gained a reputation for its quality and uniqueness, made from pure sandalwood oil sourced from the state. Over the years, the soap has found its place as a cultural emblem, not only in India but across the world.
Khanna, who owns the New York-based restaurant Bungalow, has been actively promoting the soap by gifting it to celebrities visiting his establishment. He has also previously discussed the soap's significance during a Karnataka delegation's roadshow in New York, aligning with the state's Global Investors' Meet preparations.
Strengthening the Global Appeal of Karnataka's Products
The state's recognition of Khanna's efforts highlights a growing trend of promoting local craftsmanship on the world stage. KSDL, which continues to witness strong demand for Mysore Sandal Soap, has produced over 13,000 metric tons of the soap between April 2023 and March 2024. The company plans to expand its product line and marketing strategies to capitalize on the soap's success.
In line with these efforts, KSDL is set to open an exclusive store showcasing Karnataka-made products, including Mysore Sandal Soap, at Terminal 2 of Kempegowda International Airport, further solidifying the state's place in the global market.
Karnataka's gesture towards Vikas Khanna reflects a growing acknowledgment of the importance of promoting the state's cultural heritage worldwide and the role that influential individuals like Khanna play in this endeavour.
