Karnataka HC Stays FIR Against Sandalwood Actor Upendra Over 'Anti-Dalit' Remark

In a big relief to Kannada actor Upendra, the Karnataka High Court has stayed the enforcement of the FIR registered against him under the Atrocities Act. The actor, who has transitioned into politics, had petitioned the High Court to dismiss the FIR.

Upendra's legal representative argued that the application of the Atrocities Act was inappropriate in this case since the actor had used an old proverb. Favoring the petitioner's stance, the High Court issued a formal notice to the Assistant Commissioner of Police of the VV Puram division.

Two separate FIRs were lodged against Upendra at different police stations in Bengaluru following his controversial comments about a Dalit community. These comments were made on August 12 during a live interaction with members of the 'Prajaakeeya' political party.

Based on these FIRs, the police summoned the actor on Monday morning. A police team also visited Upendra's residence in Kathriguppe, where they conducted an inquiry in the presence of the complainant. The actor, however, was not present during the police's visit.

The initial FIR was filed at the CK Achukattu police station, based on a complaint lodged by the Assistant Director of the Social Welfare Department.

In response to the backlash generated by his remarks, Upendra removed the live link from his social media account and issued an apology. Numerous Dalit groups staged protests in various areas, including Bengaluru and Ramanagara.

Concurrently, a social activist named Naveen Gowda has written to the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce, urging a five-year ban on Upendra from participating in movies.

To ensure his safety, enhanced security measures have been implemented at Upendra's residence in Sadashivanagara. A team from the Karnataka State Reserve Police has been stationed at his residence.
