Karnataka Cabinet Ends Free Hand For CBI Probes In Criminal Cases

The Karnataka Cabinet has officially withdrawn its general consent for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe criminal cases in the state, citing concerns over the alleged misuse of the agency. Law Minister HK Patil announced the decision, stating that the government was dissatisfied with how the CBI handled certain investigations.

Karnataka Cabinet Shifts Stance CBI Investigations No Longer Unrestricted

"We are revoking the open consent for CBI investigations in Karnataka, as we are concerned about the agency's misuse," Patil said. He emphasized that numerous cases referred to the CBI remained unresolved due to pending charge sheets, leaving investigations stalled.

"The CBI has even declined to take up several cases we referred to them. This bias is why we are making this decision," he added.

Patil made it clear that the withdrawal had no connection to any specific case, including the ongoing investigation into the Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) site allotment case involving Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

"This is not about the MUDA case. Our decision is aimed at preventing the CBI from going down the wrong path," he explained.

Patil also mentioned that, going forward, any communication, such as detailed notes or explanations, will only be sent to the Governor after approval from the cabinet. He alleged that the Governor's office had been exploited by the BJP.

"The MUDA case is already suggested to be investigated by the Lokayukta, as recommended by the High Court, which makes CBI involvement irrelevant in this matter," Patil concluded.
