HMPV Virus Forces DPS Schools In Bengaluru And Mysuru To Roll Out SOPs
In response to the recent identification of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in India, with two confirmed cases in Chennai and Bengaluru, and one in Ahmedabad, heightened measures to prevent the spread of the virus have been implemented in educational institutions. DPS Bengaluru and Mysuru's board member, Mansoor Ali Khan, emphasized the school's commitment to student health and safety by introducing increased surveillance and precautionary steps. This decision was driven by the vulnerability of children to respiratory infections and the need to prevent a potential outbreak, especially following reports of a significant rise in HMPV infections in China.
Khan has communicated directly with parents, issuing advisories urging them to keep their children home at the slightest sign of illness, such as a cough, cold, or sore throat. This proactive measure aims to minimize the risk of transmission among students. "We have issued circulars to parents, advising them not to send their children to school if they have even mild symptoms like a cough, cold, or sore throat," Khan stated, stressing the school's careful approach in handling the situation without causing undue alarm. He further assured that the school would circulate a detailed Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to keep all stakeholders well-informed of the necessary precautions.

The school's strategy includes not only monitoring for symptoms among the student body but also ensuring that educational progress is not disrupted due to health concerns. Khan reassured parents that students would not have to worry about missing assessments due to illness. "If a student is unwell, they will have the option to attend assessments later," he confirmed. This flexibility in the academic schedule is part of the school's broader effort to manage the HMPV threat effectively while maintaining a supportive learning environment.

Additionally, the teaching staff has been briefed to remain vigilant, promptly identifying and responding to potential cases of illness. Parents of any child displaying symptoms will be contacted immediately, underscoring the school's proactive approach in dealing with this health issue. This careful observation and swift action are crucial components of the school's response plan to ensure the well-being of its students.
The detection of HMPV cases in Bengaluru has prompted the Karnataka government to issue public health advisories. These include recommendations for citizens to avoid public gatherings if symptomatic and to wear masks in crowded areas. Such measures are vital for reducing the virus's transmission risk and highlight the importance of collective responsibility in managing health crises.
