Bengaluru's New Satellite Town Ring Road Will Make Airport Accessible from Districts Like Tumkur, Chennai
The construction of a separate road to provide direct access to Kempegowda International Airport (BLR) from various districts in the state is nearing its final stage. The Karnataka Road Development Corporation Limited (KRDCL) is working on a major project aimed at reducing dependence on Bangalore city roads for reaching the airport.

The new road is part of the 155-km Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR), which is being developed around the outskirts of Bengaluru. This strategic road is set to provide a direct connection to the airport from Budigere Cross near Devanahalli, which will benefit both local commuters and industrial vehicles traveling from areas like Chennai and Andhra Pradesh. Currently, the primary access to the airport is through Yelahanka, but the new road will enhance connectivity and streamline traffic.
As of now, 20 kilometers of the Satellite Ring Road has been completed, with only 4.5 kilometers left to finish. The remaining work is expected to be completed by July 2025. The project will help facilitate smoother travel for both in-state and out-of-state vehicles heading directly to the airport without navigating through Bengaluru city's busy traffic.
Key Benefits for East Bengaluru: The road, being developed by KRDCL, will pass through surrounding villages, including the Bangalore-Kolar Highway. It will also connect key areas in East Bengaluru such as Hoskote, Whitefield, Attibele, Anekal, KR Pura, and even locations from Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Notably, commuters from Tumkur and other nearby districts will be able to reach Budigere via the national highway without passing through the city, offering a quicker route to the airport.
Current Progress: The STRR, a project that began in 2018-19, is being developed with a budget of Rs. 2200 crore. Of the total 155 km, 125 km has already been completed, and the project is expected to finish by December 2025. As part of this, 20 kilometers of the road connecting the airport has also been completed. However, a small section of about 1 km in a forest area near Bettakote requires an alternative route. Land acquisition for some parts, especially in Mailhalli and Singhhalli villages, is still pending, but 4.5 km of highway work remains to be completed.
Future Outlook: Once completed, this alternative route will significantly ease the flow of traffic to the airport and reduce dependence on central Bengaluru routes. According to Lingamurthy, Managing Director of KRDCL, the remaining work is expected to be finished soon. The road is anticipated to be a game-changer for commuters, offering a hassle-free and direct route to the airport.
Ganesh, a local hotelier, shared his optimism, stating, "Once the road is operational, it will eliminate the dependency on Bengaluru city roads. People will be able to reach the airport without the usual traffic hassles."
Road Construction Areas:
- Budigere Cross
- Baiyappanahalli
- Bommanahalli
- Manduru
- Bandebommasandra
- Budigere
- Kondenahalli
- Singhahalli
- Mailhalli
- International Airport
This new development is expected to benefit commuters and the overall traffic flow, especially once the 4.5 kilometers of remaining work is completed.
