Bengaluru's Church Street Closed To Traffic for 1 Week For Major Overhaul
Church Street, one of Bengaluru's most renowned roads, is undergoing repairs and beautification ahead of 'BLR Habba' festival, organised by the Unboxing BLR Foundation. To support the transformation, the street will be closed to traffic for one week.

Collaborative Effort for Urban Renewal
This initiative is part of the 'Namma Bengaluru, Namma Koduge' program, a partnership between the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and the Unboxing BLR Foundation. The project encompasses road and footpath repairs, the installation of new streetlights, enhanced garbage disposal systems, improved drainage, and the introduction of decorative landscaping.
Under an agreement with BBMP, the Unboxing BLR Foundation will manage and maintain Church Street for the next two years. "Our goal is to make Church Street an inspiring place for residents and visitors from across the world," said Prashant Prakash, Chairman of Unboxing BLR Foundation.
BBMP Chief Commissioner Tushar Girinath commended the initiative, stating, "Unboxing BLR's commitment to improving urban spaces is giving Church Street a fresh look. This partnership highlights the potential of public-private collaboration in enhancing the city's infrastructure."
Concerns from Traders and Activists
Despite the optimistic outlook, traders on Church Street have expressed concerns about the week-long closure, fearing it could further impact businesses already struggling to recover.
Activists have also raised objections, questioning the outsourcing of a public road's maintenance to a private entity. "It is the civic body's responsibility to maintain all roads in the city. Handing over a public street to a private organization is not acceptable," said Vinay Sreenivasa from the Karnataka Pragatipara Beedi Vyaparigala Sanghatane. He urged BBMP to ensure transparency in its agreement with the Unboxing BLR Foundation.
Church Street has seen significant investments, including a Rs 18 crore development under the TenderSURE scheme. However, recurring issues such as loose cobblestones and frequent traffic disruptions have necessitated ongoing repairs, sparking debate over the effectiveness of previous interventions.
As the revamp progresses, all eyes are on Church Street to see if this transformation can truly make it a vibrant and resilient destination for Bengaluru's residents and visitors.
