Bengaluru Airport New Entry Fees from Dec 8: How Private and Commercial Vehicles Will Be Charged

Starting December 8, Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) will introduce new entry charges for vehicles that remain beyond the permitted free waiting time at the arrival pick-up zones of both Terminals 1 and 2. The move, announced by Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), aims to curb congestion and bring discipline to the ever-busy airport roads.

How the New System Works for Private Cars

Private vehicles (white-board cars) will get 8 minutes of free access in the designated arrival pick-up lanes.

After that:

• 8-13 minutes: ₹150
• 13-18 minutes: ₹300
• Beyond 18 minutes: Vehicle will be towed to the nearest police station. Additional penalties and towing charges will apply.

The rule applies only to arrival pick-up zones, not departure gates.

Rules for Taxis & Commercial Vehicles

All yellow-board taxis, electric cabs, and self-drive commercial vehicles must wait only in designated parking areas:

Terminal 1: P3 and P4 parking areas

Terminal 2: P2 parking

They will receive 10 minutes of free parking. After that, standard commercial vehicle parking charges will apply.

Important:

Commercial vehicles cannot wait or halt at the curbside arrival lanes. The new restrictions apply only to pick-ups-not to vehicles dropping passengers at departures.

Why the Airport Is Implementing These Fees

According to BIAL, the airport handles around 1.3 lakh passengers daily, with nearly one lakh vehicles using its road network. This has led to heavy pressure on the arrival lanes, where unauthorised halts, roadside pick-ups and prolonged waiting have become frequent. Such behaviour, the airport operator says, causes unnecessary crowding, delays, and safety concerns. To fix this, BIAL is introducing stricter lane control, enforcing no-halt zones, and discouraging misuse of the pick-up area.

Only authorised aggregators such as Airport Taxi, Uber, Ola, Quick Ride, OHM Electric Cabs and WTI Cabs will be allowed to pick up passengers from designated points. Any vehicle or cab operator blocking lanes, stopping in prohibited zones or overstaying beyond the permitted window will face penalties.

BIAL Managing Director and CEO Hari Marar said the new system is essential to ensure smooth and safe movement during a period of rising passenger traffic. He stressed that maintaining discipline at pick-up zones is not merely enforcement but a measure to protect travellers and improve the overall experience.

This Isn't the First Time

A similar fee structure introduced in May 2024 was rolled back after strong opposition from cab drivers, who claimed it would increase travel costs and inconvenience riders. This time, BIAL says it has increased the free usage limit from seven to eight minutes and provided adequate preparation time for operators and passengers.

With travel season approaching and traffic volumes at an all-time high, the airport believes the revised system will help streamline arrivals and prevent the recurring problem of congestion at the terminal kerbs.
