Bengaluru Grapples with Severe Water Shortage

One of its worst water shortages in recent years is being faced by Bengaluru, with Bengaluru city and Bengaluru rural district being notified as drought-hit districts. An order has been issued by the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) on Friday, imposing a ban on using drinking water for activities such as washing vehicles, gardening, construction, and entertainment purposes like water fountains.

A fine of ₹5,000 will be attracted for violation of the order. The order states, "Anyone found violating the above order will be fined Rs.5,000. For subsequent violations, Rs.500 will be added to the fine on a per-day basis to the principal fine of Rs.5,000." Meanwhile, amidst the water crisis, allegations are being made that vested interests are charging exorbitant rates for supplying tankers laden with water.
