Bengaluru To Chennai Via Vellore: NH-40 Highway To Get Four-Lane Upgrade
In a landmark announcement, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, unveiled plans for a transformative highway project aimed at enhancing connectivity between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. With a budget of ₹1,338 crore, the project will construct an access-controlled highway along National Highway 40, covering 28 kilometers from Walajapet/Ranipet to the Tamil Nadu-Andhra Pradesh border.
This ambitious project is more than just a highway; it represents a new avenue of growth and opportunity for the region. The well-designed highway will feature a four-lane main carriageway complete with paved shoulders and two-lane service roads on both sides. This thoughtful layout aims to facilitate smoother traffic flow, benefiting both those embarking on long journeys and local commuters who rely on these vital roads every day.

A significant element of the project is the construction of a 10-kilometer bypass around Walajapet and Ranipet, designed to alleviate congestion in these bustling towns. Travelers can look forward to safer and more efficient journeys with the addition of four major bridges and two railway over-bridges, ensuring that both road and rail traffic can coexist harmoniously.
The new corridor promises to enhance connectivity not just between Chennai and neighboring cities like Bengaluru, Tirupati, and Vellore, but also to a wider network of opportunities. Vellore, renowned for its Christian Medical College (CMC), stands to benefit immensely from this enhanced access. Patients, medical professionals, and visitors alike will find it easier to reach vital healthcare services and educational institutions, fostering a healthier community overall.
Local industries, particularly those thriving in Walajapet and Ranipet, are set to experience a renaissance as well. Known for their vibrant leather industry and small-scale engineering units that serve major companies like Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), these towns will find their fortunes lifted by improved infrastructure. The anticipated revival in road connectivity is likely to attract new investments, setting the stage for an economic boom in the area.
Additionally, the inclusion of two-lane service roads ensures that local traffic flows smoothly without sacrificing efficiency for long-distance travelers. This carefully balanced approach addresses the diverse needs of the community, recognizing that both regional and local transportation are crucial for comprehensive development.
Currently, NH 40 starts at the junction of National Highway 44 in Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh, and ends in Ranipet, Tamil Nadu. It passes through Kadapa and Chittoor.
Features and Benefits
The highway will feature:
- Four-lane main carriageway with paved shoulders.
- Two-lane service roads on either side for local commuters.
- A 10-kilometer bypass to decongest Walajapet and Ranipet.
- Four major bridges and two railway over-bridges to streamline traffic and ensure safety.
This project is poised to improve connectivity between Chennai and major cities like Bengaluru, Tirupati, and Vellore. Vellore, home to the esteemed Christian Medical College (CMC), will greatly benefit as patients, visitors, and medical professionals enjoy easier access.
Also, the improved infrastructure will uplift local industries in Walajapet and Ranipet, renowned for their leather and engineering sectors. With enhanced road networks, these areas are expected to attract significant investments and economic growth
